ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Founder and Editor-in-Chief of BASIC Magazine
For the past decade, I've built BASIC Magazine from an independent editorial vision into a print publication distributed through major U.S. newsstands.
Along the way, I've learned that creating a beautiful magazine is only one part of the journey. Behind every issue are hundreds of decisions involving creative direction, contributors, budgets, production, printing, distribution, and the business of keeping a publication alive.
I founded The Publishing Atelier to share that knowledge with the next generation of independent publishers—offering the practical guidance I wish had been available when I started.
Because a magazine should be more than a beautiful idea. It should be something you can actually bring into the world.
BEHIND THE PAGES
Short reflections on the creative decisions, business realities, and lessons behind a decade of independent publishing.
For years, we've heard that print is dead. After more than a decade of publishing BASIC Magazine, I see it differently.
In a digital-first world, thoughtful print publications offer something increasingly rare: permanence, curation, and a tangible experience.
Every issue of BASIC Magazine begins with a creative vision.
From the central theme to photography, design, and written stories, each element contributes to one cohesive editorial narrative.
Beautiful pages alone don't sustain a publication.
Independent magazines rely on a combination of advertising, circulation, partnerships, events, and licensing. Understanding the business is just as important as developing the creative vision.
